Early Access opened on 31 August 2026 with exactly one story chapter: the railway suburb called Outskirts, the frozen Depot beyond it, and whatever is jamming your signal. The main quest runs 8–10 hours, so the first 30 minutes set the pace for all of it.
| Minutes | Goal | What you actually do |
|---|---|---|
| 0–5 | Don’t die to the opening | Early reviews point to a high-lethality “joke” near the start — treat every tempting interaction in the first minutes with suspicion. We won’t spoil which one. |
| 5–15 | Power the train | Follow Babe’s orange cable to the External Module, install the battery, get back aboard and raise the pantograph. Reviews say this interaction trips people up most — it is on the train itself. |
| 15–30 | Stabilise and stock up | Sort food and water, then scavenge the suburb for Electrical Tape, Wires and Electronics — the Public Oxygen Station repair needs all three. |
The suburb officially has its own municipal anthem, linked below. Step-by-step quest order lives in the Chapter 1 walkthrough.
How do you manage oxygen in Breathedge 2?
Oxygen is the main constraint on exploration. Everything below is community-tested from a single complete playthrough of the launch build — treat the numbers as indicative, not gospel.
| Oxygen mechanic | Value / recipe (community-tested, EA launch build) |
|---|---|
| Starting suit capacity | 600 |
| Oxygen terminals | need Ice loaded in before they refill you |
| Public Oxygen Station (Outskirts) | repair with Metal ×3 + Electronics ×2 + Wire ×1 + Electrical Tape ×3 → outdoor refill point |
| Oxyworm | harvestable; an Oxyworm Nest refills your oxygen directly |
| Purified Oxygen | crafted from Ice ×1 + Metal ×1 + Oxyworm ×2; restores 120 oxygen |
Pre-launch guides describing “Oxygen Candles” and portable tanks are recycling first-game items — unverified in Early Access, so don’t plan a route around them. The refill points are on the oxygen locations page.
What materials should you gather first?
Materials hang on interactables, not floating ore nodes: you harvest a machine, a pipe or a panel with the right verb. Matching the action is faster and gentler on module durability than smashing everything.
| Action | Works on | Yields |
|---|---|---|
| Break | containers, panels (crowbar-class tool) | scrap; containers can hold Refined Metal |
| Cut | taped pipes; dark rubber pads and panels | Electrical Tape; Rubber |
| Unscrew | specific lamp fixtures | Light Bulbs |
| Pull | yanking and tearing loose fittings (official interaction list) | assorted salvage |
| Drill | Aluminum deposits | Aluminum |
What to prioritise in the first hour:
- Electronics — pulled from household machines (a washing machine is the cited example) and electronic wreckage. Players report it as the scarcest early material; the Oxygen Station repair alone wants two.
- Electrical Tape — sits wrapped on pipes, which is exactly why people miss it. Three are needed for the station.
- Titanium — looks like a small spiked ball, not an ore. You want four fast: see where to find Titanium.
- Aluminum — drilled from asteroid deposits (Aluminum page).
- Ice — floating blocks; re-read the warn box above before refining them all.
- Plastic — on station equipment and broken pieces; a review reports a dedicated Plastic Node whose look players fail to recognise, causing stalls.
- Foam — cut from yellow station insulation with the right tool; it is cold-protection filler, so take double.
The material-by-material reverse index is the materials: where to find hub; wiring specifics are on the Wires page.
What should you craft first in Breathedge 2?
| Priority | Item | Cost | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2-Metal tool (official examples call it the Crowbar) | Metal ×2 | Opens containers and panels; the exact recipe match still needs a second source |
| 2 | Purified Oxygen | Ice ×1 + Metal ×1 + Oxyworm ×2 | +120 oxygen per use, repeatable |
| 3 | Backpack | Titanium ×4 | Carry capacity 110 → 185 (+75) in community tests — the best detour in chapter one |
| 4 | Public Oxygen Station repair | see the oxygen table | a permanent outdoor refill point |
Crafting itself is the big system change: DIY modules. Basic tools never break (“intact and eternal”, in the official wording), but the modules installed in them wear out and can be partly reclaimed as materials; undamaged modules move between tools, never copy. Seven module categories exist — Sharp, Impact, Utility, Protective, Active, Capacity, Biological — with rarity tiers. Everyone gets a garage plus a free starter toolbox; advanced upgrades need dedicated workbenches.
Full tables live on the crafting recipes page and the blueprint locations hub. Still being verified: how blueprints unlock in the EA build — scanner, research bench or quest reward — so treat pre-launch scanner walk-throughs cautiously until the Scanner blueprint page is confirmed in-game.
How do you get past the Cold Protection 100 gate?
The first hard wall is a quest objective — Raise Cold Protection to 100 — in front of the frozen Depot. The design is officially obstacle-driven: hazards (extreme cold, heat, radiation, hostile robots and creatures) force preparation before access.
Protection is fitted at the Space Suit wardrobe in the train: slot Protective-class junk into the torso, arm and leg slots. One community-tested kit scores 106 points:
| Slot | Part | Cold protection |
|---|---|---|
| Torso | Knitted Teddy Bear | +34 |
| Each arm | Foam | +22 |
| Each leg | Cardboard | +14 |
Cardboard is plentiful early; Foam needs the right cutting tool on yellow station insulation. A matching full set gives a set bonus, and protective pieces wear out, so expect replacements. The classic trap: you can fly into the cold zone and still make zero quest progress — the gate is the number and the wardrobe, not the location. The cold protection guide has the full route and the suit upgrades page covers the rest of the slot system.
Which beginner tips matter most?
- Treat the first minutes as a trap. Reviews agree on one near-guaranteed early death disguised as a gag. Poke nothing that begs to be poked until you have spare oxygen.
- Match the verb to the object. Break / Cut / Unscrew / Pull / Drill beats random smashing on both speed and durability.
- Bank Ice. Water is easy to lose; oxygen terminals are useless without it.
- Hunger and thirst bite harder than before. Community consensus in early Steam reviews, with no official response yet. Water purification needs a machine plus DIY modules — the official kettle example (Capacity module + a Protective module as filter) shows the pattern; exact recipes still need in-game confirmation.
- Pick difficulty deliberately. At least Standard and Hard exist in the launch build.
- Craft the Backpack before long mining trips — 4 Titanium buys you +75 carry.
- Known launch-build bug: opening the backpack can drop the game to ~5 FPS for about five seconds. True as of the 2026-08-31 build; retest after each patch.
- The chapter is 8–10 hours, not 30. The EA story stops at a hard point; free roam continues on the same save.
- Report bugs in-game. Esc → Report Bug attaches your save; developer inbox: [email protected].
