FAQ
Where are all upgrade stations in Breathedge 2?
What upgrade do I need before the Depot?
Do tool upgrades and suit upgrades share materials?
What is the fastest food and water processing upgrade?
Breathedge 2 upgrades are not a single skill tree. Progress is station-based DIY module fitting on your train — the same Protective, Sharp, and Capacity parts you scavenge from the wreckage feed your suit, tools, water line, and food line differently. This guide lists all four Early Access stations, confirmed numeric bonuses from the 2026-08-31 build, and the Chapter 1 order that wastes the least material.
The four upgrade stations at a glance
| Station | What it upgrades | Module families used |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe | Space suit Cold, Heat, Radiation | Protective (Foam, Cardboard, Knitted Teddy Bear) |
| Workbench | Scrap, Thumper, Cutter, and other tools | Heft, Edge/Sharp, Handle, Protection, Container |
| Bobby Kettle | Water purification speed and tank volume | Protection (filter), Container (Rusty Bucket, Plastic Barrel) |
| Nutra Pack-O-Mat | Food processing speed and hopper size | Knob (Gear), Container (Rusty Bucket, Plastic Barrel) |
Everything installs at a physical machine on the train — items in your pocket do nothing until slotted. That is why the Cold Protection quest only counts wardrobe-equipped gear.
Wardrobe: suit slot upgrades

Open the Space Suit Wardrobe to fit Protective modules into five slots:
- Chest
- Left Arm and Right Arm
- Left Leg and Right Leg
Each piece adds a separate resistance value. Cold, heat, and radiation do not convert — a cold set is useless in a hot zone.
Confirmed Protective materials (Early Access)
| Material | Typical slot use | Cold Protection | Other notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foam | Arms or legs | +22 per piece in verified sets; yellow insulation on station structures — harvest with Cut | Primary early cold filler; see foam stat UI below |
| Cardboard | Legs | +14 per piece | Common salvage from cardboard stacks in Outskirts |
| Knitted Teddy Bear | Chest | +34 Cold, +36 Radiation | Hidden crate pickup — one of the best single-slot inserts |

A documented Chapter 1 cold set — 1 Teddy Bear + 2 Foam + 2 Cardboard — totals 106 Cold Protection, clearing the 100 threshold required for Depot progression. Full slot math and set bonuses are expanded in the suit upgrades guide; material routes sit in the materials where-to-find hub.
Workbench: tool module upgrades

The Workbench accepts five upgrade categories on compatible tools:
| Category | Role |
|---|---|
| Heft | Impact force — heavier swings and breaks |
| Edge / Sharp | Cutting efficiency on Cut interactions |
| Handle | Grip and control modifiers |
| Protection | Module durability buffer on the tool itself |
| Container | On-tool storage where supported |
Tool-specific modules (verified EA numbers)
Scrap (general pry/smash tool):
| Module | Source hint | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Bone handle | Gym area salvage | Handle upgrade baseline |
| Gear | Common mechanical salvage | +10 damage |
| Barbell plate | Gym floor loot | +20 damage |
Thumper (heavy impact tool):
| Module | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Scissors blade | +12 |
| Jaws attachment | +15 |
Cutter (Cut-specialist tool):
| Module | Bonus |
|---|---|
| Scissors blade | +5 |
| Jaws attachment | +10 |
Modules wear with use; base tool frames do not. Recover partial materials from broken modules and keep spares for deep signal jammer facility runs. Recipe names and verb pairings are tabulated in crafting recipes.
Bobby Kettle: water filter and tank upgrades

The Bobby Kettle purifies water in two upgrade tracks:
Filter (Protection modules)
| Filter material | Processing bonus |
|---|---|
| Foam | +0.5 |
| Cardboard | +0.3 |
| Knitted Teddy Bear | +0.6 |
Higher processing means less real-time waiting per batch — valuable when the beginner guide loop ties food, water, and oxygen to the same train schedule.
Container (tank expansion)
| Container part | Capacity bonus |
|---|---|
| Rusty Bucket | +20 |
| Plastic Barrel | +40 |

Rusty Bucket and Plastic Barrel also appear on the food processor — grab both part types when you see them in Outskirts debris fields.
Nutra Pack-O-Mat: food processing upgrades

The Nutra Pack-O-Mat handles calorie prep on two tracks:
Knob (processing speed)
| Module | Processing value |
|---|---|
| Default | 0.2 |
| Gear (knob upgrade) | 0.5 |
A Gear knob is the single biggest quality-of-life food upgrade in Chapter 1 — prioritize it after survival gates if you are starving between quests.
Container (hopper size and leak protection)
| Container part | Effect |
|---|---|
| Rusty Bucket | +10 capacity; reduces leak failures on small batches |
| Plastic Barrel | +50 capacity |
Stack Gear processing with a Plastic Barrel if you batch-cook before long Depot or jammer excursions.
Recommended Chapter 1 upgrade order
This order follows quest gates, not theoretical max DPS:
| Priority | Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | First tool (crowbar-type) | Unlocks Break/Cut verbs for scavenging |
| 2 | Backpack (4 Titanium) | Carry 110 → 185 — see suit upgrades |
| 3 | Wardrobe cold set to 100+ | Hard Depot gate |
| 4 | Workbench Scrap Gear or Barbell plate | Faster container breaks in the facility |
| 5 | Bobby Kettle filter + Nutra Pack-O-Mat Gear knob | Cuts idle time on the train between waves |
| 6 | Container expansions | Quality of life before post-ending cleanup |
